Crain's Cleveland Business - Contessa Gallery

After nearly 20 years in its Lyndhurst location, Contessa Gallery has moved from Legacy Village into a new space in Woodmere's Eton Chagrin Boulevard.

Contessa Gallery Owner and Founder, Contessa Tscherne saw an opportunity to expand the gallery's impact in a location with greater foot traffic, accessibility and cultural synergy,” Contessa Gallery said in an email to Crain’s. “The move reflects Tscherne's forward-thinking approach to positioning Contessa Gallery as a global tastemaker while deepening its roots in Northeast Ohio.”

The 3,900-square-foot space has a modern, open layout with high ceilings, custom museum-grade lighting and “state of the art flexible wall systems,” the gallery director said.

Contessa Gallery opened at the 28699 Chagrin Blvd., Suite 260, on May 15. Business hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Eton’s “sophisticated, open air, European village-style ambience with its award-winning gardens and luxury retailers” complements Tscherne's commitment to creating “immersive, high-end art experiences,” the gallery said.

The 26-year-old gallery features artwork from artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Chuck Close, Robert Indiana and Salvador Dalí.

“Each of these important works embodies exceptional artistic merit and investment potential, reinforcing our position as a leader in the art market - not only locally in Cleveland but nationally with additional premier locations in Southampton, New York, and Palm Beach, Florida,” a press release stated.

This new space is part of Tscherne’s “strategic vision aimed to elevate the gallery's presence in a setting that aligns with its collector-oriented ethos,” the gallery said.

“This move reflects our ongoing commitment to the Cleveland market and providing our clients with an extraordinary collection of contemporary and modern masterpieces, surrounded by the finest in art and luxury,” Tscherne said in the release.

Tscherne hopes the new location will allow enhanced collector engagement, and more immersive exhibitions, artists talks and educational events are planned, the gallery said. It plans to showcase larger-scale works and have rotating exhibitions.

Plans also include community integration and partnerships with local organizations, which have previously been done, for example, with the presenting sponsor for the outdoor spider sculptures created by Louise Bourgeois at Star Plaza in Playhouse Square.

The gallery has had partnerships with the Akron Art Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art, and it helped facilitate the placement of a Robert Indiana ‘ART’ sculpture at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the release said. It also supported and donated to University Hospitals Art Council and the Cleveland Clinic, according to a press release.

"Contessa Tscherne’s aim to continue assisting clients in curating collections that resonate personally and culturally, passing down legacies to future generations or institutions, in line with our core principles of passion, integrity and education,” the gallery said.
